Erau Festival | History of Erau
Erau comes from Kutai language "Eroh" which means lively, boisterous, noisy, joyful atmosphere. The atmosphere is lively, boisterous voice in the sense of the many activities of a group of people who have good intent and meaning is sacred, ritual, and entertainment.
The first Erau was held on Tijak Tanah ceremony and bath in the river bank when Aji Batara Agung Dewa Sakti was 5 years old. When he was crowned as the first king of Kutai Kartanegara (1300-1325), he also held Erau ceremony. Then, Erau is always held by the kingdom of Kutai Kartanegara.
During its development, the ceremony Erau apart as the coronation ceremony of King, also for giving the honoring title from the King/Sultan to the the royal family or community leaders that is credited against the Kingdom.
The Erau ceremony performed by the relatives of Keraton/Palace by inviting all community leaders who serve the kingdom. They come from all areas of the empire to bring supplies of food, livestock, fruits, and also the artists. In this event, Sultan Palace and other relatives gave a banquet to the people by providing the best possible service as Sultan gratitude for the devotion of its people.
After the end of the reign of the kingdom of Kutai in 1960, the territory became an autonomous region of Kutai regency. Erau tradition is still to be maintained and preserved as a party of the people and culture festival that being routine agenda of Kutai Regency in commemoration of the anniversary of the city Tenggarong, Kutai Kingdom central government since 1782.
Implementation Erau
Implementation Erau latter according to the procedure Kutai Sultanate was implemented in 1965, when Aji Pangeran Praboe Anoem Soerya Adiningrat was appointed as the crown prince.
While Erau as the ceremonies in an effort to preserve the culture of the Kutai local government was held in 1971 on the initiative of Kutai Regent, Drs. H. Achmad Dahlan. Then Erau ceremony was held once in 2-year to celebrate Tenggarong anniersary every 29 September.
At the direction of the last Sultan of Kutai, Sultan AM Parikesit, Erau can be implemented by Kutai government with the obligation to carry out a certain ceremonies, such as should not be doing the ceremony of Tijak Kepala and title giving. And some activities are allowed such as Dayak ceremonies, art performance and sports.
Erau As Cultural Festival
Kutai regency government policy to make Erau a cultural feast that is to set the execution time Erau permanently.
Erau festival which has now been entered in the national tourism calendar of events, no longer associated with the art and culture of Kutai Sultan but more varied with the appearance of a wide variety of art and culture that exist and live and thrive throughout the Kutai regency.
